MediaCorp’s MEon3 to bring 3-on-3 fun to Orchard Road

SINGAPORE — The challenge of shooting hoops 3-on-3 style in the heart of Orchard Road has proven to be an irresistible draw for basketball enthusiasts in Singapore.

SINGAPORE — The challenge of shooting hoops 3-on-3 style in the heart of Orchard Road has proven to be an irresistible draw for basketball enthusiasts in Singapore.

They have responded so strongly to MediaCorp’s inaugural MEon3 The Ultimate Streetball Challenge that all 200 team slots have been snapped up ahead of its deadline yesterday.

This means that more than 600 players will be competing across eight categories — Boys and Girls 15 years & under, 17 & under and 20 & under, as well as the Men’s Open and Women’s Open — in one of Singapore’s biggest 3-on-3 competitions, when the event is held at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza on June 15 and 16.

The top three teams from each category will win sports apparel vouchers worth S$1,000, S$600 and S$400 respectively, while the top eight finishers will be entitled to a special prize.

An initiative from ME (MediaCorp Entertains), the MEon3 competition is part of the media company’s drive to reach out to a younger audience. “The response has been overwhelming and I was pleasantly surprised by it. Unfortunately we had to close registration earlier than expected as we had set a target of 200 entries,” said Toba Hidetaka, MediaCorp’s Head of Sports Segment, Strategic Marketing.

“Basketball is popular among the youths … it connects people face-to-face and we feel that there is value to initiating this event to engage our youth audience and also to help develop basketball in Singapore.

“We are also looking to develop more consistent year round engagement points with basketball, which might include programmes on the TV platform.”

Spectators can also enjoy fringe activities at the venue during the MEon3 weekend, including celebrity 3-on-3 matches featuring MediaCorp stars Tay Ping Hui, Lee Teng, Brandon Wong, Yuan Shuai, Shane Pow, Jeffrey Xu, Ya Hui, Elizabeth Lee, Tracy Lee and Hong Huifang.

Other activities include slam dunk challenges, shooting machines, inflatable hoops, long-distance shoot-out contests and meet-and-greet sessions with MediaCorp artistes. LOW LIN FHOONG
