SINGAPORE — National netballer Charmaine Soh, who starred in Singapore’s gold medal exploits at June’s SEA Games, very nearly gave up the sport when she was in her teens.

Back when Soh, 25, was still in secondary school, her mother had urged her to give up netball and focus on her studies instead, fearing that she would not be able to juggle the demands of both commitments.

While that is a common concern for many budding netballers, a new partnership between Deloitte and Netball Singapore will provide them with a pathway to further their education and career while still pursuing the sport at a competitive level.

The one-year agreement will see Deloitte offer employment and education opportunities to netballers in the National Opens team, 21 & Under squad, as well as tertiary players who have participated in Netball Singapore events.

Through this partnership, eligible netballers will be offered internship and scholarship opportunities within Deloitte, with arrangements made to accommodate the work and sporting commitments of the selected players.

“This partnership provides multiple opportunities to progress the sport,” said Netball Singapore president Jessica Tan. “The education and employment opportunities with Deloitte will give players additional career avenues as they pursue sporting excellence.”

Added Philip Yuen, chief executive officer of Deloitte Singapore: “This is our commitment towards developing sports within the local community ... providing local athletes with avenues to balance their sporting and professional goals.”

Deloitte is no stranger among Singapore sports. Through its in-house athlete recruitment programme — Deloitte Ignite — as well as its partnership with Sport Singapore through the spexBusiness Network, the company already counts more than 20 national athletes among its employees. They include shuttler Derek Wong, as well as netballers Soh, Micky Lin and Yu Mei Ling.

And Soh believes that this new partnership will greatly benefit Singapore netball.
