Bowler Cherie Tan finishes third at USBC Queens Finals

SINGAPORE – National bowler Cherie Tan claimed third spot at the Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PBWA) USBC Queens Finals in Louisiana, United States early Wednesday morning (May 24), winning USD$6,500 (S$9,000) in the first major of the 2017 PWBA Tour season.

Cherie and teammate Jazreel Tan – who eventually finished fourth – had qualified for the stepladder finals as the third and fourth seed respectively, with fellow Singaporean Shayna Ng edged out of the fifth and last spot in the finals after a 587-578 loss to Marissa Thomas of the United States.

In the elimination finals, Cherie survived a challenge from fifth seed Thomas, winning the encounter 289-210 to set up her next round against third seed Jazreel. The match between the teammates saw Cherie sealing the win, 213-203 against Jazreel.

However, the Singaporean bowler found her progress in the stepladder finals halted by second seed and 2013 Queens champion Diana Zavjalova, as the Latvian bowler claimed the victory 256-179. Zavjalova went on to claim top spot and the winner’s trophy after defeating two-time Queens champion and top seed Liz Johnson of the United States.

“I started really well and I was pretty satisfied with my execution for the matches,” said Cherie, the 2016 PWBA Sacramento Open Champion.

“I lost a little of my carry on the second game but managed to survive the match. During the third match match, I didn’t quite make the right decisions on the left lane. (I) needed to switch to something that could go through the mid a little more but didn’t quite manage to do so.”

Jazreel was disappointed with her performance after coming so close to a podium finish, as she said: “I’m disappointed to have fought so hard to get to the show and yet lose.

“All I could do and control was to make my shots, make good decisions and hope the pins fall. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen today. However, every loss or win is a learning experience and I’m happy that I gave all that I could.”

Hours later, Cherie was back on the bowling lanes competing in the PWBA Fountain Valley Open Finals in Baton Rouge, Lousiana. She finished fourth, while American Kelly Kulick, Verity Crawley (England) and Johnson placed in the top three.

Over at the 43rd Philippine International Open, there was also good news from Team Singapore’s bowlers in Manila, as Iliya Syamin Mohd Azni and Jermaine Seah finished second and third respectively in the women’s open.

“I tried my very best and kept telling myself to fight on despite bad games and bad shots,” said Iliya, 18.

“I told myself to do my best and maximise all my shots. I focused more on my game instead of others, since ultimately it is a fight with myself.”
