Bronze for women’s air pistol team, despite error

SINGAPORE —An unfortunate error by Teh Xiu Yi may have put the women’s 10m air pistol team out of gold-medal position at the 38th South-east Asia Shooting Championships (SEASA), but the trio of Xiu Yi, her elder sister Xiu Hong and Nicole Tan were still delighted to pick up a bronze for their efforts.

Yesterday at SAFRA Yishun, Xiu Yi, the 2014 Youth Olympics silver medallist (10m air pistol mixed international teams), fired a blank shot during the second series of the qualifying round, after failing to load her pistol. The 18-year-old then incurred a two-point penalty for taking an extra shot at the end of the round, and her final total of 362 points placed her 18th in the 25-strong field.

But team-mates Xiu Hong (381) and Tan’s (370) qualification efforts saw the team clinching the bronze with a total of 1,113, behind Malaysia and Taiwan who took gold and silver, respectively, with 1,124 and 1,114.

Despite missing out on the top two, the women’s team took pride in finishing ahead of Vietnam, who had beaten Singapore to gold at the 2013 SEA Games in Myanmar.

Competing in the individual finals, Xiu Hong proved the Singapore team’s performance was no fluke, as the 20-year-old claimed the silver in the elimination final ahead of Vietnamese Olympian Le Thi Hoang Ngoc. Taiwan’s Yu Ai-wen won the gold with her total of 195.0, a mere 0.3 points ahead of Xiu Hong.

“I was nervous today because of the atmosphere … but I’m not disappointed because I shot quite a number of eights during the finals so I wasn’t expecting anything,” said Xiu Hong, who will also feature in the 25m sport pistol tomorrow. “I have mixed emotions after winning the silver, because this is not a very major competition and I wished I had done better. I’m still glad we won a team bronze medal despite what happened (to Xiu Yi).”

The third day of action at the SEASA and 2014 Singapore Invitational Shooting Championship saw local shooter Chua Shin Yong winning gold in the women’s 10m air pistol gold in the Invitational, while the junior shooters Bernice Bin, Fion Pan and Shannon Ng finished third in the SEASA junior 10m air pistol team event.
