National distance runner Soh Rui Yong has started a Facebook campaign to help raise money for the family of former national hurdler Zaki Sapari (picture), who was killed in a motorcycle accident last Friday.

The 22-year-old National Serviceman, who held the national 400m hurdles junior record of 53.51sec, was riding along Mandai Road on Valentine’s Day when he collided with a lorry and was pronounced dead on the scene.

Former team-mate Soh has designed a T-shirt with Zaki’s signature celebratory pose and the words “In loving memory of Zaki Sapari”, and it will be priced between S$18 and S$20 and available in red or green. All proceeds from the sales will go to Zaki’s family.

“Zaki’s loss is particularly great for his family as he was the eldest child, and he was about to start work and support the family financially,” said Soh, who is currently studying at the University of Oregon. “I am deeply worried about the family’s situation, and decided to start a fundraising project for them.”
