SINGAPORE – The two teams contesting the inaugural Football Association of Singapore (FAS) elections were officially confirmed on Tuesday (Apr 18) afternoon, with both nine-member slates of Team LKT and Team Game Changers cleared for the polls.
Former FAS vice-president Lim Kia Tong, spearheading LKT, will go head-to-head with Hougang United chairman Bill Ng, leader of Game Changers, for the presidency, which will be decided on April 29.
“The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) confirms that the following candidates have qualified to contest in the Election of the FAS Council for the term 2017 – 2021 on 29 April 2017,” the FAS said in press statement.
The names of all the candidates on both slates were listed, along with the 14 others contesting on an individual basis for the six council member positions. A total of 32 candidates will contest the election.
An initial 34 candidates had submitted forms to contest in the elections by the March 25 deadline, with four individual candidates failing the requisite checks. A fifth individual candidate, Moklas Ma’arof, withdrew his nomination.
Of the four who failed, three succeeded in their appeals – Lai Boon Teck, Jeffrey Sim and Kumar Appavoo. The first two are contesting under the Game Changers’ flag, while Kumar has no affiliation. The fourth candidate, Suresh Nair, who was affiliated to Game Changers, appealed but did not get the green light.
Only four out of the 14 individual candidates will be running under Game Changers’ banner, as opposed to six for Team LKT. The other four are independents.
The elections will take place at the Sport Singapore (Black Box) Auditorium at the Singapore Sports Hub.
