SINGAPORE – A penalty in the closing minutes saw Singapore slump to a 2-1 defeat to Thailand in their opening Group B match in the 2014 ASEAN Football Federation Suzuki Cup this evening (Nov 23).

At the National Stadium, Singapore fell behind in the 8th minutes after the Lions were caught napping by a Thai throw-in which resulted in Mongkol Thosakrai scoring from close range.

Khairul Amri restored party 12 minutes later, finishing off a superb cross from Shaiful Esah with an unstoppable header past Thai goalkeeper Kawin Thamsatchanan.

Although the Thais looked the stronger side, the match seemed headed for a draw before Safuwan Baharudin handled in the box following a Thai attack. Charyl Yannic Chapuis gave Singapore goalkeeper no chance with his spotkick, the goal proving the winner for Thailand.

The result sends Thailand to the top of Group B with Singapore at the bottom. In an earlier match, 10-men Malaysia fought out a dour draw with Myanmar at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

Singapore need to beat Myanmar on Wednesday (Nov 26) to keep their hopes alive of defending the Suzuki Cup, while Thailand will meet Malaysia on the same day.
