SINGAPORE — In a bid to help raise the standards of Singapore football, Japanese electronics giant Epson will be organising a youth tournament to help discover more promising talents.

Called the Epson Singapore Cup, the seven-a-side tournament will feature two categories — an Under-15 tournament and an Under-17 category — and will be held at Safra Tampines from Sept 3-10.

The tournament is open to the public, and all youths can form their own teams. However, all current S.League and Prime League players will not be eligible to play.

The U-15 winners will get a chance to train at the Valencia CF Soccer School in Singapore for two days, while the U-17 winners will earn a training stint in Japan with J2 League side Matsumoto Yamaga Football Club for five days.

“Youth development is an integral element of our corporate social responsibility focus in Singapore and around the region,” said Toshimitsu Tanaka, managing director of Epson’s regional office in Singapore at a media luncheon yesterday.

“We believe that the Epson Singapore Cup represents our continuous commitment to inspire and empower our youths.”

Football Association of Singapore president Zainudin Nordin believes the tournament will provide “a great opportunity” for youths who are not involved in the national youth set-ups.

“Epson are illustrious at how they are constantly looking at ways to develop younger talents and to ensure our youth pipeline is vibrant.

“The non-National Football Academy (NFA) boys have a great opportunity to showcase their skills and talents and we are beginning to see why the future of Singapore football lies in the youth development area.”

Epson has been actively involved in local football in recent years. A sponsor of the FAS, it has been sending selected NFA U-14 and U-15 players to Yamaga for training stints.

In February, it agreed to be the main sponsor of S.League side Geylang International.

Registration for the Epson Singapore Cup is open until Aug 31. Go to www.epson.com.sg/epsonsgcup2016 to find out more. AMANPREET SINGH
