SINGAPORE — Heading into their final group game yesterday, local side Chelsea FC Team Costa needed to win to have a chance of lifting the okto Cup Super League trophy.

The situation looked bleak when they fell 2-0 within minutes of kick-off against Malaysian side Gombak Setia Futsal Club.

While the Singaporean side rallied and eventually secured a 4-4 draw at the end of the pulsating, five-a-side 20-minute match, it was not enough to earn them the top spot.

But head coach Muhd Faizal was still happy with his team’s performance, as he said: “I am very happy, having seen what they have learnt in these two days. The experience they had (helped them to improve) their technical skills and ability, and understanding of the game.

His side’s stumble meant Chelsea FC SS of Indonesia walked away as overall champion of inaugural Super League tournament, which saw 16 youth teams battle it out over the weekend at the Singapore Recreation Club.

SS was the only Indonesian side in the invite-only tournament, with the other teams hailing from Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.

The Super League is an expansion of the okto Cup, the biggest futsal tournament in Singapore for kids aged between seven to 14. This year’s okto Cup featured 600 teams competing across three age categories.

The Super League, which featured only players aged 13 and 14, added an international flavour to the okto Cup. It was an opportunity relished by Chelsea FC SS players and their head coach Mohamed Afiq, as he said: “The tournament itself is very good exposure ... it’s a good tournament, well-organised and if it is held again next year, we will come back and participate.”

The champions took home S$2,500 in cash, while Team Costa and local side F-17 Messi received S$1,500 and S$1,000 respectively for finishing second and third.

The prizes were given out by guest-of-honour Sim Ann, Senior Minister of State for Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth.

All matches from this year’s okto Cup and Super League will be broadcast over nine episodes in a television series that will premiere on Jan 10. TEO TENG KIAT
