SINGAPORE – Irfan Fandi, the son of Singapore ex-footballer Fandi Ahmad, has been selected as one of The Guardian’s 40 best young talents in world football.

The 17-year-old striker, who also represents the Singapore U-20 team, was the only Singaporean named in the list, which included a total of 31 different nationalities around the world. Only six were featured from the Asia Pacific region: Japan, China, South Korea, Vietnam, Australia and Singapore.

John Duerden from The Guardian, described him as a striker with a “good touch” and that he may be able to match the legendary status of his father.

Irfan is currently having a stint with Chilean first division side Club Deportivo Universidad Católica together with his younger brother Ikhsan, 15. This is the second club in Chile that they’re based at, after an earlier spell at Athletic Club Barnechea.

In August, leading Malaysian bank CIMB offered a one year deal amounting to a “six-figure” sum to sponsor the two youngsters in their education and football training in South America.
