Madhu, Shakir injury doubts against Selangor

SINGAPORE — Safuwan Baharudin has his sights on reaching the eight-goal target this season set by coach Fandi Ahmad, though it is Paolo Rangel whom he will be watching tonight when the LionsXII face Selangor in the Malaysian Super League (MSL).

Already with five goals — four in the league and one in the FA Cup — the 23-year-old centre-back has proven to be a genuine attacking threat when freed from his defensive duties.

“Eight goals is not an unreasonable target, given I scored six apiece in the previous two seasons,” said Safuwan. “After all, I am always involved in the attacking set-pieces and corner kicks the LionsXII are awarded.”

Against second-place Selangor, who are three points in front and with a game in hand, Safuwan — who is the current captain in the absence of Isa Halim — is mindful of the hosts’ main striker from Brazil.

“It has always been difficult playing against Rangel, and to be honest, I don’t enjoy playing against him,” said Safuwan. “Even when he was with Perak last season, he was a handful for me.”

Fielding a strong starting XI could be a challenge for Fandi tonight, with regular right-back Faritz Hameed suspended after picking up three yellow cards. Madhu Mohana and Shakir Hamzah are carrying knocks from Tuesday’s win over Pahang — Madhu with a swollen right foot and Shakir a bruised knee.

“ Madhu and Shakir both did not train on Thursday. They will travel, but I am worried over their fitness,” said Fandi.

“We need everyone in the team to be at their physical best. Against Selangor at home and with their current form, we are in for a torrid time at the Shah Alam Stadium.”

Up front, Khairul Nizam’s comeback has lasted all of one match — the 23-year-old is carrying a swollen knee and unlikely to feature.

Sufian Anuar, who scored a hat-trick against MSL leaders Pahang, could start alongside Khairul Amri in attack, although Fandi has reservations about the 26-year-old’s ability to last the 90 minutes.

“Right now, Sufian is in a jubilant mood. He did well with his three goals on Tuesday night. Surely he will be a strong contender to start,” said Fandi.

Sufian himself is aware his place in the start list is not guaranteed, but is taking it in his stride.

“Maybe I am more comfortable in the role of a super sub,” he said. “The choice is for the coach to make, but if I start, I am ready to give 100 per cent, like I always do.” DAN GUEN CHIN
