MANCHESTER — Manchester City yesterday (Sept 1) increased its options and experience at centre-back by signing Argentina defender Martin Demichelis on a two-year deal from Atletico Madrid.
City manager Manuel Pellegrini made his move for the pony-tailed Demichelis after seeing captain Vincent Kompany ruled out with a groin injury and Joleon Lescott, Javi Garcia and Matija Nastacic looking shaky in central defence in City’s last two games.
The 32-year old Demichelis will be playing under Pellegrini for the third time in his career, having been together at Argentinean club River Plate and then in a loan spell at Malaga in the Spanish Primera Liga last season.
“I am delighted to have joined City because I am still hungry for success and want to improve,” said Demichelis, who has made 37 appearances for Argentina.
Financial details about the deal weren’t disclosed. AP
