Man United ‘mad’ to sell Danny Welbeck

LONDON — Rio Ferdinand has criticised his former club Manchester United for selling Danny Welbeck to Arsenal. The defender, who left for Queens Park Rangers this summer after more than a decade at Old Trafford, believes Welbeck will be a star at the Emirates Stadium and that Arsenal’s gain will be United’s loss.

Welbeck moved to Arsenal for £16 million (S$32.3 million) on transfer deadline day, prompting Ferdinand to describe the deal that saw the striker move to United’s rivals as “mad”.

“I cannot believe United let Danny go, especially to Arsenal,” Ferdinand said. “That seems mad to me. He’s a real threat to defenders and, if Arsenal use him right, he will be very dangerous for them. That will be good news for England, too, because if he is playing regularly that has to benefit the national team.

“Danny has everything to be a top player. English football has yet to see what he can really do because he hasn’t been getting a run of games.

“At Arsenal, he will be the main man and I have no doubt he will flourish. Imagine the pace Arsenal will have when everyone is fit.”

Meantime, the man who replaced Welbeck at Old Trafford, Colombian ace Radamel Falcao, has admitted that he is nervous in the lead-up to his debut for the club this weekend, following the serious knee injury he suffered at the start of the year.

The striker, who joined United on a season-long loan on the day the revolving door spat Welbeck to London, tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in January, which ruled him out of the World Cup.

Falcao, who played for Colombia in their 1-0 friendly defeat to Brazil on Friday night, said the injury had left him anxious before that game, and that it will be the same before he wears the red shirt of United for the first time.

“Because of the injury I felt so nervous,” he admitted. “Almost like it was my first time with the national team. And I expect it will be the same before I play my first game for Manchester United.” THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
