Minute’s silence for Anthonysamy marred by oblivious fans

SINGAPORE — It was supposed to be a poignant moment as both the Singapore and Malaysia national football teams stood sombrely around the centre-circle at the National Stadium to observe a minute’s silence as a mark of respect for the late ex-Singapore international S Anthonysamy.

The former Woodlands Wellington player had died on Thursday at age 51 after succumbing to complications from a chest infection. He is survived by his wife Keralin Mary.

But while the players from both teams did their part to commemorate Anthonysamy, there were large sections of the crowd that failed to follow suit. Only a handful of spectators, some of whom were holding the Singapore flag, stood up for the minute of silence. The majority, however, remained seated, while many were seen talking during the occasion.

This happened despite the request of the stadium announcer for everyone to respect the minute of silence.

Anthonysamy, who was warded at Singapore General Hospital since last Friday, had been paralysed from the neck down since a freak accident during a pre-season match in September 1996.

The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) had previously paid tribute to Anthonysamy in a statement, which said: “During his playing days, Anthony always played with boundless courage and tenacity and was a positive influence on the pitch. Off the field, Anthony demonstrated determination and optimism and had inspired many others around him

“On behalf of the Singapore football fraternity, we extend our deepest condolences to Anthony’s family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.”

The FAS also released a tribute video to Anthonysamy yesterday.

Anthonysamy’s funeral will be held today.

Apart from paying tribute to Anthonysamy, the FAS also screened a tribute video montage of the late former Singapore President S R Nathan before the teams entered the pitch.

Mr Nathan, who died in August, was an avid fan of sports and football, and often turned up for many of the Lions’ matches. NOAH TAN
