Singapore wins World Cup qualifying opener

SINGAPORE — Singapore got off to a winning start in the opening match of the AFC 2018 World Cup qualifier second round group stage in Phnom Penh.

SINGAPORE — Singapore got off to a winning start in the opening Group E match of the AFC 2018 World Cup qualifier second round in Phnom Penh.

Striker Khairul Amri scored first to give the Lions a 1-0 lead in the first 10 minutes followed by Safuwan Baharudin’s brace in the 21st and 35th minutes to give the team a comfortable 3-0 lead at half time against Cambodia.

The visitors extended their advantage when Fazrul Nawal received an assist from Hariss Harun in the 54th minute to seal a convincing 4-0 victory.

Singapore will next play Japan on June 16.
