SINGAPORE — Local sports governing body Sport Singapore (SportSG) has lodged a police report against Tiong Bahru Football Club for suspected misuse of club funds, as well as a purported attempt by a senior club official to obstruct the completion of audits of S.League’s sit-out clubs.
The chairman of Tiong Bahru FC is Bill Ng, a presidential candidate for the upcoming Football Association of Singapore (FAS) Elections, who is recently embroiled in a saga over his club’s controversial S$500,000 donation to the Asean Football Federation (AFF).
Ng is also the chairman of S.League club Hougang United FC.
In a media statement released on Thursday (April 20), SportSG said it received a tip-off on April 3 alleging that a senior Tiong Bahru FC official had, with false reasons, instigated another club to delay or obstruct the completion of audits until after the FAS Elections are over on April 29.
SportSG also said it has received information which raised “serious questions” about the S$500,000 donation by Tiong Bahru FC to the AFF.
“Following the media reports that Tiong Bahru Football Club had donated S$500,000 to the ASEAN Football Federation through the FAS, SportSG looked into the matter, and received further information on 18 April 2017," the statement read.
"On the same day, SportSG also made further checks, which raised other serious questions about the use of Club funds. Based on legal advice, SportSG decided to file a police report on 19 April 2017 at about 7:50pm.”
A police spokesman also confirmed the report lodged by SportsSG.
"The Police will conduct a thorough investigation and will take appropriate action against any persons who have committed offences in Singapore. As investigations are ongoing, it is inappropriate to comment further at this point,” the police spokesman said.
The latest development may have an impact on the upcoming FAS Elections, with SportSG planning to meet the FAS Ad-hoc Electoral Committee to “clarify the way ahead for the upcoming elections”.
Ng is leading Team Game Changers in a two-way fight against Team LKT, which is led by former FAS vice-president Lim Kia Tong.
