Striker Amri wants more Suzuki Cup goals

SINGAPORE — When it comes to finding the net in the ASEAN Football Federation Championship, no one in the present Singapore team knows it better than 29-year-old Khairul Amri.

The dynamic forward has found the net in each of the Lions’ successful campaigns in 2004, 2007 and 2012. And he wants to see his name on the scoresheet this year too, as the Lions seek to defend the title they won two years ago.

Against Thailand in Sunday’s opener, the striker knows he will be closely watched.

“I go into every game trying to score, do my part and contribute to the team,” he said after yesterday’s training session at the Jurong West Stadium. “(In the 2012 tournament), I started late. I scored only in the last group game, but I hope to start scoring earlier now.

“I have no targets, but just to contribute to the team, try to convert the chances and gain confidence.”

Asked if Thailand would be the toughest opponents in Group B, Amri said he is counting on the home fans to aid his team’s cause.

“It’s always hard against Thailand but, with the home crowd and our new venue, the National Stadium, I think the boys can’t wait to give their best,” he said.

“Our fans are the 12th man and they can help by cheering on the boys to give us the motivation and frustrate the Thais. And on the field, we hope to do our part by going all out.

“It will be really hard to beat them. But we did it before, so you never know.” EMMANUEL PHUA
