SINGAPORE - After an absence of eight years, the annual Sultan of Selangor (SOS) Cup will be played in Singapore.

The yearly friendly battle between an Singapore Selection and Selangor - which celebrates the intense and historic rivalry between the two sides when the Republic was playing regularly in the Malaysia Cup - will be held on May 6, and will be played at the new National Stadium for the first time.

Singapore is hosting the event for the first time since 2009, and organisers announced on Friday (March 17) that this year's event will include a new ‘Singapore-Selangor Schools Challenge Cup’ match between the Under-16 boys of the Singapore Sports School and a Selangor Combined Schools team.

The game will be played before the traditional curtain raiser match between Singapore Veterans and Selangor Veterans, and the main match between the Singapore Selection and Selangor Selection.'

It was also announced at the media conference that Fandi Ahmad, the FAS' head coach for youth, will be the coach for the Singapore side.

Eager to emerge victorious, Fandi said: "It's all about friendship but it's also a match between two main rivals. Everytime we step onto the pitch, whether is it for 10 minutes or an entire game, we can feel the rivalry.

"It's kind of a reunion for us, but we've got to bring the best players because we want to win it"

Teo Hock Seng, group managing director of Komoco Motors, and co-chairman of the SOS Cup organising committee, said: “The addition of the inaugural Singapore-Selangor Schools Challenge Cup match is to include and involve the youth who are our future, and will further strengthen and ensure continuity in the traditional ties between Singapore and Selangor through football.”

“I would like to thank Football Association of Singapore and Singapore Sports Hub for making this event at the National Stadium possible, and we hope the fans from both sides of the Causeway will enjoy an evening of entertaining and exciting football in the true spirit and sporting rivalry between Singapore and Selangor.”

Lim Kia Tong, who is the interim president of the FAS Provisional Council, said: “We have been working hard with our partners to increase the vibrancy of local football and bring the Kallang Roar back.

"Football is a unique sport that brings together people from all walks of life to cheer as one. The Sultan of Selangor's Cup is one such avenue, as it highlights the historical friendly rivalry between Singapore and Selangor. We look forward to welcoming the Selangor players and fans to Singapore, and three exciting matches for fans to enjoy.”

Organising chairman Tan Sri Dato Abdul Karim Munisar said: "We would like more of the younger generation to be given the opportunity to not only get to know the Selangor vs Singapore tradition in Malaysian football but to also participate by playing to fuel and maintain the legacy and prestige of the Sultan of Selangor’s Cup.”

It remains to be seen though whether the Selangor team will be made up of the Malaysian Super League side this year, or by PKNS FC, another Selangor club.

According to a report on Goal.com, PKNS FC will be replacing Super League side Selangor as the representative of the Selangor state team for this year's SOS Cup.

A letter addressed to PKNS club president Siti Zubaidah Abd. Jabar by the competition organiser has surfaced on the social media. The letter reportedly said that the club have been selected by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah to represent the state team in the match.

It is not known yet whether the Selangor Super League side will be providing any of their players to the state team for the match.

Since 2002, Singapore have won the SOS Cup six times, and Selangor won it on seven occasions. Both sides were declared joint winners once.

Tickets for the match are priced at $8 for Adults and $3 for Concession. They will be available from 9.00am on 3 April 2017 via www.sportshubtix.com
