Tampines Rovers (picture, in yellow) played party poopers at Jalan Besar Stadium last night, handing new S.League champions Albirex Niigata Singapore FC a humbling defeat on the night of their coronation.

Goals from English striker Billy Mehmet, Canadian winger Jordan Webb, American youngster Diego Silvas (2) and Shahdan Sulaiman condemned the Japanese side to a 1-5 rout in their final match of the S.League season. The result will be a confidence-booster for the Stags ahead of their Singapore Cup final against the same opponents this Saturday.

This is the first S.League title for Albirex, which joined the domestic top flight in 2004. Along with the trophy and medals, Albirex were also presented with the S$250,000 winners’ cheque. They are on course for an unprecedented treble after also winning the League Cup in July, with only Tampines standing in their way in Saturday’s Cup final. Photo: S.League
