Ryan Giggs (picture) has parted ways with Manchester United after agreeing to a settlement, ending a 29-year association with the only football club he has played for.

According to the BBC, United will release an official statement in the coming days.

Giggs, 42, had a year remaining on his contract as assistant manager, but new boss Jose Mourinho intends to fill that role with long-time friend Rui Faria.

Giggs, who made a record 963 appearances for United, represents one of the final links to the Ferguson era, but he decided to move on after failing to reach an agreement over another role at the club. He had served under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, and felt ready to manage United, but was disappointed to be overlooked in favour of former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss Mourinho, whose appointment was confirmed in May.

Giggs was largely responsible for promoting exciting 18-year-old England striker Marcus Rashford to the first team last season.

Meanwhile, United are stepping up their efforts to sign Paul Pogba, following their capture of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with more talks expected next week with Juventus. A £31.7 million (S$56.28 million) deal for Henrikh Mkhitaryan is also close to being confirmed. Both Pogba and Mkhitaryan are represented by Mino Raiola, who is also Ibrahimovic’s agent.

United have already signed Ivory Coast central defender Eric Bailly from Villarreal for £30.4 million, as Mourinho steps up his wholesale rebuilding plans.

It appears that United now also have a clear run at signing Pogba if they can agree to a deal with Italian champions Juventus. It is understood that Real Madrid and Manchester City stepped aside because of the fee being demanded for the 23-year-old midfielder.

Real were prepared to go as high as £60 million for Pogba, but sources close to Juve suggested on Friday that United had already offered £80 million for their former player, who made three appearances in 2011-12. AGENCIES
