Golf star Sergio Garcia to debut at 2017 SMBC Singapore Open

SINGAPORE - He is a nine-time US Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour winner and has also triumphed 11 times on the European Tour. And golf fans in Singapore will now get the opportunity to watch Spanish golf star Sergio Garcia in action on local shores when he makes his debut at next year’s SMBC Singapore Open, revealed organisers earlier today (Aug 1).

SINGAPORE - He is a nine-time US Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour winner and has also triumphed 11 times on the European Tour.

And golf fans in Singapore will now get the opportunity to watch Spanish golf star Sergio Garcia in action on local shores when he makes his debut at next year’s SMBC Singapore Open, revealed organisers earlier today (Aug 1).

The SGD$1.34 million event, which will be held at Sentosa Golf Club from January 19 to 22 next year, will see Garcia back in action in Singapore for the first time since he took part in the inaugural Tiger Skins tournament at the Tanah Merah Country Club back in 2002.

“I have great memories of playing in Singapore so the chance to go back there and play in the SMBC Singapore Open is one that I am really looking forward to,” said the 36-year-old.

“The SMBC Singapore Open has certainly established itself as one of the top events in Asia, regularly attracting the world’s best, so it is an ideal way for me
to start 2017,” added Garcia, who will be representing his country at the Rio Olympics this week..

This year’s Singapore Open saw South Korean Song Young Han win by a shot from American former world No 1 Jordan Spieth and next year’s competition, which will be in its 51st edition, will once again be jointly-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and the Japan Golf Tour Organisation.

“It will be a treat for everyone in Singapore to see Sergio Garcia compete in the SMBC Singapore Open,” said Ross Tan, president of the Singapore Golf
Association.

“He is one of the few global stars not to have played in the tournament so we look forward to welcoming him and adding another feather in the cap for our Open.”
