Malaysia out for revenge in golf’s Causeway battle

SINGAPORE—Golf’s version of Causeway rivalry makes a return to Laguna National Golf and Country Club for its second from June 6 to 8, pitting the best fairway swingers from defending champions Singapore and Malaysia.

SINGAPORE — Golf’s version of Causeway rivalry makes a return to Laguna National Golf and Country Club for its second edition from June 6 to 8, pitting the best fairway swingers from defending champions Singapore and Malaysia.

Backed by Prudential Singapore, this year’s instalment will also also see the introduction of Junior Causeway Trophy at Laguna National, two days before the senior golfers take to the greens.

The series is sanctioned by both the Singapore Professional Golfers’ Association and the Professional Golf Association Malaysia.

Led by non-playing captains Said bin Abdul Latif of Singapore and Malaysia’s M. Ramayah, the teams will compete in a Ryder Cup match-play format in the four ball, foursome and singles games.

Said the Singapore captain: “Our success last year means there is a lot of pressure for us to keep our champion status. But we have an excellent team teeing off once again and with our home advantage, we are easily up to the challenge.”

Singapore walked away with the title last year when they beat an experienced Malaysian side 15½ - 8 ½.

Their rivals across the Causeway are again the better team on paper and Ramayah warned they won’t let their challenge slip this time round.

They are intent on avenging last year’s defeat, and he added: “Based on last year’s performance, people may see us as the underdogs; but the Singaporeans would be wise not to dismiss us early on. We have a lot to prove, an outstanding team sheet and we’re hungry to win this for our country and our fellow Malaysians.”

As part of the tournament’s commitment to promoting golf in the region, entry will be free to members of the public, for all three days of the competition. Fans can also support their respective national teams on Facebook at:

Daily tournament highlights will also be aired on Fox Sports, StarHub TV and Astro.
