LOUISVILLE — Despite the problems caused by his recurring back injury, Tiger Woods is yet to decide if he will miss the PGA Championship which starts tomorrow in Louisville, Kentucky, said his agent.
Woods withdrew during the final round of the Bridgestone Invitational last weekend with back spasms and returned home to Florida for medical evaluation.
However his agent, Mark Steinberg, told ESPN there are no plans as yet to pull out of the PGA: “Way too early. He has to rest and get treatment and then assess (it) later … Pointless to make that decision now without proper time to give him best chance. Nothing further today, maybe (not) even tomorrow.”
The 38-year-old former world No 1, who has been afflicted by a string of injuries, was playing in only his third tournament since being ruled out for three months following back surgery.
Beyond this weekend’s action, the latest setback has also raised doubts over his chances of playing for the American team in next month’s Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in Scotland.
US Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson said it does not bode well right now for Woods, who could still be selected as a wildcard captain’s pick for the team.
“Tiger would be a great addition to our team,” Watson told PGA Tour Radio. “As I’ve said all along, I would pick Tiger Woods if he’s healthy and playing well. I just hope that maybe it’s an isolated problem that he can turn around and possibly play this week at the PGA.” AGENCIES
