Historic first for cadet fencers
SINGAPORE — Singapore’s national fencers have notched a first for the sport at the 2015 Asian Juniors and Cadets Fencing Championships in Abu Dhabi, with Kevin Chan and Neville Lim winning two gold medals in the men’s foil individual cadets (Under-17) and men’s epee individual cadet (Under-17) respectively.
SINGAPORE — Singapore’s national fencers have notched a first for the sport at the 2015 Asian Juniors and Cadets Fencing Championships in Abu Dhabi, with Kevin Chan and Neville Lim winning two gold medals in the men’s foil individual cadets (Under-17) and men’s epee individual cadet (Under-17) respectively.
Ranked fifth in the competition, Neville upset Japan’s top cadet fencer Akira Komata in the final, defeating the Japanese Olympic Cup junior winner 15-13 to claim the gold.
Team-mate Kevin was not to be outdone in the men’s foil cadets, as the teenager battled his way into the final, eventually defeating Yudai Nagano 15-7 to clinch Singapore’s second gold at the championships.
Team Singapore’s fencers have won two gold, one silver and two bronze medals at the Asian Juniors and Cadets Fencing Championships, with the cadet team events commencing today. Some 700 fencers from Asia are competing in the annual championships, which ends on March 8.
At the last edition in Jordan in March 2014, Singapore’s athletes returned home with six bronze medals.
