SINGAPORE – Ellen Lee, Member of Parliament for Sembawang GRC, was named the new president of the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) at its Biennial General Meeting today (Sept 6).

The 57-year-old lawyer was elected unopposed at the meeting at the National Library Board, alongside deputy presidents Alex Yam and Jack Soh, who returns for another two-year term. Ellen will take over the hot seat from fellow Nee Soon MP Lee Bee Wah, who led the STTA for a six-year tenure from 2008 to 2014.

Speaking to the new management committee members, affiliates and media after the elections, Ellen stressed that she will continue to build on the foundation laid by her predecessor. I would like to thank all the members for putting their faith in my ability to lead table tennis,” she said. “Bee Wah has done a fantastic job in growing table tennis in the last six years, but she will not be missed because she will continue as an advisor of STTA.

“The youth development pathway is something that we will continue to strengthen, and we are committed to continuing on this path to develop aspiring young talents to be the best that they can be. Sponsorship has been crucial to the on-going success of table tennis and I hope to secure one more sponsor for our national jersey.”

Newly-appointed deputy president Yam also said today that the STTA will work with their partners and the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) to bring the World Championships to the S$1.33 billion Sports Hub at Kallang.

Lee was happy to hand over the reins to her successor, and she said: “I would like to congratulate Ellen, Alex and the whole team for stepping forward to serve STTA. I know that it is not easy. A lot of people think STTA is a high profile national sports association...I’m sure they will continue to do their best if everybody gives them the same support that they have given me. We managed to do quite a lot of projects because of the good team work and support of many people.”

Lee’s tenure as table tennis chief had seen the paddlers clinching three medals (one silver, two bronze) at the Olympic Games, a World Championships title in 2010, and numerous titles at the Commonwealth Games and ITTF World Tour. She also kickstarted the youth development pathway to groom young local players for Singapore, beginning with the PAP Community Foundation Programme for kindergarten children, and a School-Within-A-School programme with the Singapore Sports School.

The STTA election held today saw 10 office bearers elected unopposed into the management committee, with 10 people contesting the remaining nine member posts in today’s BGM.
