SINGAPORE — Up against strong international competition, Singapore’s rhythmic gymnasts created history yesterday when they medalled on debut at the biennial Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships (April 9-12) in Richmond, Canada.

The quintet of Yeo Siew Lyn, Jael Chew, Allison Tang, Noelle Goh and Edlyn Ho competed in the Under-15 junior category and took silver for the Group Hoop event, and bronze for the overall Rhythmic Group.

Singapore edged out powerhouses United States (12.000) for silver in the Group Hoop with a score of 12.050, finishing behind China (12.900). A fourth-place finish in the Group Clubs meant the Singapore junior team received a combined score of 24.100 to take bronze for overall Rhythmic Group, finishing behind China (26.700) and the United States (25.100).

Lee Hong Chuang, First Vice-President of Singapore Gymnastics, lauded the performance of the Republic’s young gymnasts and thinks the team can go on to greater heights at international competitions.

Said Lee: “Although we missed out on qualifying for the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing this year, as we do not have enough rhythmic gymnasts who meet the age limit (15 years and above), we are hopeful of the sport being included in the 2015 Southeast Asian Games (SEA) in Singapore.

“We sent the girls to the Pacific Rim Championships because it is a prestigious event and we want them to gain exposure and understand more on how the judges rate their performance.

“This is so that we can prepare ourselves for SEA Games next year, if we can get the chance to compete.”

The Singapore National Olympic Council has yet to decide if Rhythmic Gymnastics will be included in next year’s SEA Games as part of Gymnastics, which is among the 36 confirmed sports. ADELENE WONG
