MADRID — Fernando Alonso will officially finalise his switch to the McLaren Formula 1 team before the Abu Dhabi grand prix in two weeks, claimed several reports today (Nov 10).

According to Autosport, McLaren is still to decide on which of its drivers will Alonso replace: Jenson Button or Kevin Magnussen.

Spanish newspaper AS reported that Alonso’s deal will be the largest in the history of Formula 1 and presented as a multi-year agreement.

Alonso, 33, left McLaren in 2008 after just one year on the team. He joined Ferrari in 2010 after a two-year stint at Renault.

Despite five years at the Scuderia, Alonso failed to win a single Drivers’ World Championship.

Alonso’s replacement at Ferrari will most likely be four-time F1 champion Sebastian Vettel. Although Vettel’s switch to Ferrari has yet to be officially confirmed, his current team Red Bull Racing announced last month that the German driver would be leaving the team at the end of the season.
