SINGAPORE — The unidentified 27-year-old man who was arrested for walking onto the race track midway through the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix yesterday (Sept 21) has not been charged yet, the Singapore Police Force said today (Sept 22).

The individual was spotted walking along the side of the Esplanade Drive section of the Marina Bay Street Circuit while the race was ongoing, which prompted the safety car to be deployed immediately.

While the man’s motivations for his actions remain unclear, Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel said after the race that they had seen him take out his phone to try and take pictures of the race.

A check with race organisers today revealed that they were still looking into the matter. They are expected to release a statement once their investigations have concluded.

A statement from F1’s governing body the FIA yesterday said: “We are awaiting a full report from the clerk of the course in order to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident.”

This is not the first time this season that someone has accessed the track during a race: A spectator ran across the circuit during practice at the Chinese Grand Prix in April. NOAH TAN
