SINGAPORE - Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel set the best time in the final practice before today’s (Sept 21) qualifying session at the Singapore Grand Prix.

The Formula One championship leader had the fastest time yesterday as well but was pushed harder this time, and his best lap was only two-tenths of a second better than that of Lotus’ Romain Grosjean.

Mercedes drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, who were expected to be Vettel’s closest rivals in tomorrow’s race, were third and fifth fastest respectively, separated by Red Bull’s Mark Webber.

Ferrari drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa were down in sixth and 10th respectively, with Alonso’s best more than a second off Vettel’s pace. Between the Ferraris were the McLarens of Sergio Perez and Jenson Button in seventh and ninth, with Sauber’s Nico Hulkenberg eighth.

Vettel boasts a 53-point lead in the drivers’ championship with seven races to go, and the German’s form so far around the Marina Bay circuit indicated he could stretch that advantage to near unbeatable proportions by winning tomorrow’s race.

He is aiming for a third-straight win in F1’s annual night race in his quest to become just the third man in F1 history to win four straight titles. AP
