ASICS City Relay adds new half marathon category

SINGAPORE - In a bid to reach out to aspiring runners looking to take part in their first distance event, and build up racing momentum, the organisers of this year’s ASICS City Relay have added a new half marathon (21km) category to the race, which will be held at the Singapore Sports Hub on Sept 24.

According to Geoff Meyers, the managing director of Ironman Asia, who are the new event organisers of this year’s City Relay, the aim is to push runners, who aspire to complete the marathon one day, to take the next step forward.

“We hope to appeal to first-timers to take on this run to achieve their first marathon goal, in the company of friends with our new 21km category,” he said in a media release.

Organised as a team event, the ASICS City Relay features two distances: Marathon (42km) and Half-Marathon (21km). Participants can register as all-Male, all-Female, Mixed four-runner teams, or join the Corporation or School categories.

Depending on whether he is competing in the half or full marathon, each runner will complete either 5.25km or 10.5km - one lap or two laps of the course around the Sports Hub precinct. All relay changeovers will take place within the Stadium. This year’s event will also feature a new route along the Kallang River.

Yogesh Gandhi, who is the Managing Director for ASICS Asia, said: “We believe that the relay styled marathon will not only benefit the body and the mind, but will also accomplish a bigger milestone of overcoming individual differences and inspiring solidarity.

“We are excited to work with IRONMAN Endurance Asia to deliver an event that brings across a socially beneficial impact alongside a spirit of competitiveness, and look forward to seeing runners turn out in full force for the race in September.”

Online registration for the Relay has commenced at www.cityrelay.com.sg

However, this year’s edition will be capped at 1,500 teams - a total of 6,000 runners - to ensure the best running experience for all. A total of 560 Early Bird team slots will initially be made available at S$200 for half marathon, and $220 for marathon sign-ups on a first-come, first-served basis. Normal team slots will be available at $220 for half marathon, and S$240 for marathon respectively.
