SINGAPORE — The year 2016 has gotten off to a rolling start for the Singapore Bowling Federation (SBF), as the national sports association celebrated the grand opening of its new S$3.5 million home — SingaporeBowling@Rifle Range — today (Jan 16) at the Temasek Club.

Among the guests at tonight's party were Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean, and Senior Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth Sim Ann. With the centre transformed into a party venue, guests were treated to a performance by local music band 53A, a Harley Davidson photo booth, as well as a night of bowling on the lanes.

The 38-lane facility has been open to the public since October 2015, and it will also be home to the SBF's 60-strong national squad.

The Temasek Club venue is part of the association's ambitious plan to become Singapore's first financially independent NSA as the SBF is hoping to open two more bowling centres around the island. Aside from lane rentals, the centre will also be available for corporate bookings and events.

"We're grown up now, and we want to be independent," said SBF president Jessie Phua. "We'll like to say we took the harder road (in becoming financially independent). Let the money go to the next emerging sport and other deserving NSAs."

Added DPM Teo: "Singapore Bowling has always wanted a training facility of its own, and I want to congratulate Singapore Bowling for having got one here at Temasek Club with state-of-the-art training systems for coaches to bring the best out of athletes.

"Singapore Bowling has been a very consistent performer on the international and regional level and it's a credit to the sports association that they have been able to do so. We hope that with the new facility that they will do better in the future.

"The president of Singapore Bowling wants to have financial independence and generate its own income stream, I think that is most commendable. That may not be able to be done with all sports, but where it is possible it is most commendable."

The new facility will also include the latest Dartfish technology  - set up with an initial S$150,000 fund from the Singapore Sports Institute - on the lanes to allow the national coaches to record and analyse the bowlers during practice and competition.
