SINGAPORE - National sailors Loh Jia Yi and Jonathan Yeo have won the 420 Boys' title at the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships in Tavira, Portugal today (July 19).

The Singaporean pair topped the 32-strong field to cap the Republic's most successful outing at the meet, where a bronze from Ryan Lo in the Laser Radial Boys' class helped Singapore finish fifth out of 50 competing nations in the overall Nations trophy.

"I am the happiest person in the world right now," said Jonathan. "We had tears of joy when we were sailing towards the finish line, and I am just speechless right now. I am just really grateful to everyone who has supported my partner Jia Yi and I throughout our journey.”

The silver medal in the 420 Boys' went to Malaysia's Mohammad Faizal Norizan and Ahmad Syukri Abdul Aziz, with Japan's Ibuki Koizumi and Kotaro Matsuo taking the bronze.

The win was also Singapore's first world title in the 420 Boys' class since 2005, when Terence Koh and Teo Wee Chin triumphed in Busan, South Korea.

"This is only the beginning and they will need to continue working hard towards their Olympic ambitions," said Koh, now the high performance manager at the Singapore Sailing Federation. "The Olympic level rachets up several notches and I hope that they rise to the challenge.”
