GOLD IN WUSHU

Singapore's first gold medal of the day was won by 18-year-old wushu exponent Jowen Lim.

Lim beat nine other competitors in the men’s optional daoshu and gunshu event.

He wowed the crowd at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre with a stunning display of blade-work in the daoshu portion to score 9.69. Combined with his 9.68 for the gunshu on Sunday – both scores were the highest in their own right – it was enough to clinch the Republic’s first gold in the sport at this Games.

A DREAM DEBUT

Two years ago, she was just a volunteer at the SEA Games. But now 16-year-old fencer Amita Berthier is a gold medal winner.

It was a surreal triumph for Amita, who had to contend with the loss of her father when he passed away in a workplace accident in February last year.

The 16-year-old kept her cool to record a 15-7 victory over Samantha Kyle Catantan of the Philippines.

The women's 4x100m freestyle relay team broke a SEA Games record that had been in place since 2009. Their time was more than a second faster than the old record.

Singapore also won another silver in the pool as Quah Zheng Wen was edged out by Indonesia's I Gede Siman Sudartawa in the 50m backstroke. Quah could not defend his 2015 crown, with Sudartawa also breaking Quah's SEA Games record.
