SINGAPORE — National swimmer Quah Zheng Wen has set a new national record in the men’s 100m backstroke heats at the FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia, today (Aug 3).

The 18-year-old clocked a new personal best of 54.40secs, erasing his old national mark of 54.51secs from last month’s SEA Games on home soil. However, Quah missed out on the Olympic “A” mark for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, as his time was 0.04sec off the mark of 54.36sec.

Quah finished 21st out of a field of 67 swimmers in the event, and did not make the semi-finals held later this evening.

Mitchell Larkin of Australia was the fastest qualifier (52.50sec), with 2012 Olympics gold medallist Matt Grevers of the United States (53.21sec) and China’s Xu Jiayu (53.29sec) qualifying second and third respectively.
