NANJING - Rain poured heavily with half an hour to go till the start of the opening ceremony (8pm) of the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games (YOG).

There is, however, no dampening to the spirits of the tens of thousands of who are filling the 61,500-seater stadium at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre, with the opening ceremony hosts keeping the crowd engaged.

Satellite monitoring and cloud seeding have been deployed, but efforts were to no avail in preventing Mother Nature taking its course.
