RIO DE JANEIRO — National shuttler Derek Wong cruised to a 21-5, 21-6 victory on Saturday (Aug 13) in his opening match against Suriname's Soren Opti.
The 27-year-old, who is ranked 55th in the world, made light work of his lower ranked opponent (318), storming to a 21-5 win in the first game before sealing victory 21-6 in the next one.
Wong will face world No 1 Malaysian Lee Chong Wei in his second Group A match on Sunday, 8.55am.
Only the top player from each group will advance to the round of 16.
"I played a pretty good match today, he was trying to prevent me from attacking him so I had to defend well," said Wong.
"It was a good first match as I have Chong Wei to play and he also plays a lot of attack.
"I watched Chong Wei play, he injects a lot of speed and will push me around the court. I have to try and more better, make him move together with me and not let him control me.
"Definitely against Chong Wei, I don't expect any easy points, and I expect long rallies.
"The Olympic Games has been a really fantastic experience for me and also knowing what Joseph Schooling did last night. I feel proud leading this contingent and I wish him all the best in the 100m fly final. I hope he goes for gold."
