SINGAPORE – National swimmer Joseph Schooling will swap his swim cap and goggles for a golf club on Nov 22, when the United States-based athlete returns to the Republic for the Singapore Swimming Association’s (SSA) inaugural golf fundraising event at the Tanah Merah Country Club.

For the price of a S$100,000 Platinum Sponsorship, donors will get the chance to play a round of golf with Schooling - who won Singapore’s first-ever gold medal at the Rio Olympic Games with a spectacular swim in the men’s 100m butterfly final.

Aside from a flight for three people to play golf with Schooling, the Platinum Sponsorship will also include a celebration dinner at the VIP table with the President of Singapore and SSA patron Dr Tony Tan, as well as the Schooling family comprising Joseph and his parents.

Seven sponsorship packages ranging from S$1,250 to S$100,000 will be available for the fundraiser, which will offer participants an afternoon of golf at Tanah Merah’s Gardens Course, food and beverages, and the opportunity to win prizes and a luxury car for the hole-in-one and novelty golf holes.

The SSA is aiming to raise some S$500,000 during the event, with the money to go toward its “SGP (Sustenance, Growth, People) Fund” to support the association’s plans to achieve its Vision2020 objectives. These include a support system for retired elite athletes, strengthening development pathways for its ecosystem of athletes, coaches and affliliate clubs, as well as building the professional expertise of staff and officials within the community.

Schooling is looking forward to his second trip back home after his Rio Olympics victory parade in August.

“Winning Singapore’s first ever Olympic Gold medal in Rio was a dream come true, and I hope that this has inspired the aquatic community and shown them what we can achieve even against the world’s best,” the 21-year-old University of Texas undergraduate said.

“Whilst Singapore looks to become a world-class aquatic nation, it’s important to remember that to get there, we need the support of many parties, including partners and sponsors. I’m glad to have the opportunity to give back to the cause through the upcoming fundraiser, and look forward to meeting all involved in November.”
