Sailor Yin earns S’pore Laser Radial berth at 2016 Olympics

SINGAPORE — A second berth in the sailing competition for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro has been secured for Singapore by Elizabeth Yin.

SINGAPORE — A second berth in the sailing competition for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro has been secured for Singapore by Elizabeth Yin.

The 23-year-old national sailor was placed 19th in the women’s Laser Radial class at the ISAF Sailing World Championships in Santander, Spain today (Sept 18) for Singapore to finish 15th overall and secure one of 19 spots available in the event for the Rio Olympics.

Yin, who competed at the London Olympics two years ago, posted a scoreline of 38-28-7-1-16-9-46 in her seven races.

Marit Bouwmeester of the Netherlands was the overall winner with 27 nett points.

The ISAF Sailing World Championship is the first qualifying regatta for the 2016 Olympics, with 50 percent of spots available across all 10 classes.

Last week, Yin’s national team-mate Colin Cheng had earned Singapore a place in the Laser Standard class at the Rio Olympics.
