Sailors stay in medal positions

SINGAPORE — Singapore’s Bernie Chin leads the men’s Byte CII competition at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing after chalking up three top-five finishes in the three races held today.

The 15-year-old started the day in 13th position overall and performed well in light wind conditions (4-8 knots) at Jinniu Lake, winning Race 5 before picking up fifth and third in the subsequent two races to wrest top spot in the 30-man fleet.

After seven races, Bernie is on 33 points, leading by four points over Brazil’s Pedro Luiz Marcondes Correa (37). Portugal’s Rodolfo Pires is another three points adrift, with four races remaining in the competition.

In the women’s Byte CII, Samantha Yom moved up a spot into second place but is now within striking distance of leader Odile van Aanholt of the Netherlands.

Samantha finished second in Races 5 and 6, and 11th in Race 7. She now trails van Aanholt by four points, with Italy’s Carolina Albano a good 19 points adrift in third place.

In the Techno 293 windsurfing event, 16-year-old Ynez Lim improved from 13th to eighth position overall. ADELENE WONG
