SEA Games: Quah Jing Wen wins 200m butterfly, sets new national record

KUALA LUMPUR — Quah Jing Wen has won the 200m butterfly final, with a time of 2:12:03.

KUALA LUMPUR — Quah Jing Wen claim the honour of becoming Singapore's first swimming champion of the 29th Kuala Lumpur SEA Games when she won the SEA Games women's 200m butterfly final on Monday night (Aug 21) in a time of 2min 12.03s.

The 17-year-old lead from the second leg onwards and gradually broke away to emerge the clear winner, leaving Vietnam's Le Thi My Thao a distant second in 2:14.52. Thailand's Patarawadee Kittiya took the bronze in 2:15.05.

Quah's time broke the old national record, set by Tao Li in 2008. Tao Li's previous national record of 2:12.63 was set in a high tech supersuit during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Earlier, Jing Wen's elder brother, Zheng Wen, came in second in the men's 50m backstroke final.
