KUALA LUMPUR — Singapore's Quah Ting Wen defended her 100m freestyle crown at the 29th SEA Games on Wednesday night (Aug 23) in style when she set a Games record en route to winning the gold.

In a close fight, the 25-year-old fended off Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Anh Vien to touch the wall in 55.74sec, eclipsing the SEA Games mark of 55.93sec, which she herself set at the 2015 edition in Singapore.

Vien, who fought Quah tooth and nail all the way, took silver in 55.76sec.

Jasmine Alkhadi of the Philippines took the bronze in 55.90sec while Jing Wen, Quah's younger sister, was fifth in 56.12sec.

Quah was seen breaking down in tears after winning her first individual gold medal of the KL Games. She won a team gold in the 4x100m freestyle relay on Monday (Aug 21).
