KUALA LUMPUR — Quah Zheng Wen has lost his 50m backstroke title at the SEA Games, coming in behind Indonesia's I Gede Siman Sudartawa in the first event of the first night of the swimming competition.
The 20-year-old, who was an Olympic Games semi-finalist last year, came in second with a time of 25.39s. Meanwhile Sudartawa broke Quah's SEA Games record in the event with a time of 25.20s.
Vietnam's Nguyen Paul Le was third in 25.82sec.
Quah's silver is Singapore's first medal in swimming at the 2017 SEA Games.
His timing, however, was slower than his SEA Games record of 25.27s set in Singapore two years back.
He has an opportunity to make amends on Tuesday as he will be competing in the 200m butterfly. He has also been pencilled in for the men's 4x100m freestyle relay.
