Senior Singapore swimming official Woon Sui Kut dies

SINGAPORE - Veteran sports administrator Woon Sui Kut, a well-known and widely respected figure within the Asian swimming community, passed away today (Dec 21). He was 84.

SINGAPORE - Veteran sports administrator Woon Sui Kut, a well-known and widely respected figure within the Asian swimming community, passed away today (Dec 21). He was 84.

Woon died at Changi General Hospital after suffering a fall at home. 

Woon was part of the Executive Committee of the Singapore Swimming Association, where he served as an advisor.

He was also a vice-president of the Asian Swimming Federation and chairman of its technical committee.

As a technical official with swimming's world governing body FINA, Woon also officiated at numerous major international meets, including the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens in which he was involved in the disqualification of multiple Olympic gold medallist Aaron Peirsol, who was deemed to have executed an illegal turn in the 200m backstroke final but was eventually reinstated.

He had also officiated at the South-east Asian (SEA) Games in Myanmar earlier this month.
