SINGAPORE — Seven more companies have joined the Sports Excellence Business (spexBusiness) Network, bringing the number of companies that carded Singapore national athletes can have access to for employment opportunities to 20 across 16 industries.

The companies are: Banyan Tree, CapitaLand, Fuji Xerox Singapore, OSIM International, Pacific International Lines, Sports Link Holdings and Volkswagen Group Singapore.

This was announced by Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, Lawrence Wong at the Lexus Boutique today (Dec 12), where an appreciation event was held for the corporate partners in the scheme to mark its first year.

Since the scheme was launched in November last year, 38 Singapore national athletes have been placed with partner companies on internships, apprenticeships, part-time and full-time employment as part of the spexCareer scheme, which is part of the spexBusiness Network.

The spexCareer Scheme is a customised scheme that develops a support system for athletes to cope with the dual demands of sports and their career.

One of them is national shuttler Derek Wong, http://vote.ourbetterworld.org/entry/8048331 who joined professional services firm Deloitte on a six-month contract in July this year as a Research Specialist in the Clients & Markets Department.

“I am thankful to Deloitte’s tremendous support and for arranging a customised work that allows me to work flexibly from home around my training schedule,” said the Commonwealth Games silver medallist.

“Full-time athletes like myself, will be able bring 100 per cent to the sporting field, when we know that companies are extending their arms out so that we will not need to worry over our future career plans.”
