Singapore lose second game at World Youth Netball C’ships

LONDON — Singapore fell to their second defeat in the World Youth (21 and Under) Netball Championships in Glasgow when they lost to Barbados 38-67.

LONDON — Singapore fell to their second defeat in the World Youth (21 and Under) Netball Championships in Glasgow when they lost to Barbados 38-67.

The Republic had been blitzed 27-82 by traditional powerhouses England on Saturday and were eager to get back to winning ways.

However, Barbados, who play a very physical game with strong athletic players — proved too tough to beat.

After taking a 14-9 lead in the first quarter, the Caribbean Islanders stretched their advantage to 28-20 at the half and went even further ahead (43-31) by the end of the penultimate quarter.

The final period was a tense affair as Singapore worked hard to claw back the margin but it was a step too far as Barbados stayed focused on their task of collecting their second win of the championship.

Despite the margin of defeat, goal attack Jocelyn Ng and national coach Joanne Loo were pleased with the team’s efforts and work rate.

Said Ng: “It was a really tough match but we had some good phases of play, we just weren’t able to keep them going. We kept fighting though and gave it everything we had.”

Loo added: “We were both fighting for the top eight play-offs so we knew they were going to give us a good fight but we made them work for it.

“We stuck to our game plan in the first half but in the final periods we ran out of gas a little and need to rest some legs tonight to prepare for our next match. If we win tomorrow we have some big matches ahead of us.”

Singapore take on the Republic of Ireland today (Aug 26) and on paper, should be able to record their second win of the tournament (they had beaten Papua New Guinea 54-39 on Friday).

Ireland are currently bottom of the pool having yet to win a match and Singapore will be looking to keep them there to give themselves a chance in the 9th-16th place play-offs which take place from Wednesday.
