SINGAPORE — The Republic’s shuttlers have ended their run at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Championships after Derek Wong and Gu Juan suffered defeats in their respective men’s and women’s singles matches in Guangzhou today evening (Aug 7).

Despite scoring an upset victory over world No 10 Sony Dwi Kuncoro on Monday, Wong (No 52) struggled in his second round match against Malaysia’s Daren Liew (17), losing the encounter 21-13, 21-13.

Teammate Gu Juan — who had qualified for the top eight at the 2011 All-England Championships — also failed in her quest to upset fourth seeded Thai Ratchanok Intanon. The battle between both shuttlers went down to the wire, with the Thai player eventually claiming victory, 16-21, 21-17, 21-9.

Top men’s singles player Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia remained on track for yet another exciting encounter with Chinese superstar Lin Dan after scoring a 3-0 victory over Indonesia’s Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka to set up a third round match against Wang Zhengming of China. Meanwhile, Lin Dan will meet Malaysia’s Chong Wei Feng after posting a 21-14, 21-17 win over Eric Pang of the Netherlands.
