S'pore Canoe Marathon makes a splash with 800-strong turnout

SINGAPORE – More than 800 paddlers took part in the 2017 Singapore Canoe Marathon (SCM) on Sunday (Jan 15), which was held at the Singapore Sports Hub.

SINGAPORE – More than 800 paddlers took part in the 2017 Singapore Canoe Marathon (SCM) on Sunday (Jan 15), which was held at the Singapore Sports Hub.

This year’s SCM, which is Singapore largest canoeing event, featured a record number of 15 boat types, and the largest repertoire of categories, including uniformed group, paracanoe and kids events.

Culture, Community and Youth Minister Grace Fu flagged off the first wave – the Senior Men K1 and K2 (30km) - at 8am,  while Mr Ong Ye Kung, the Minister for Education (Higher Education and Skills) and Second Minister for Defence joined in the fun, paddling in a double sit-on-top kayak with SEA Games gold medallist Mervyn Toh in the afternoon community segment.

Cheung Tsz Chung from Hong Kong Canoe Union won the Senior Men K1 event, crossing the line in 2hr 39min 41sec. Nanyang Technological University’s Shaun Tan and Heng Chye You of the National University of Singapore were second (2L41.31) and third (2:46.29) respectively.

In the Senior Women’s K1,  NTU’s  Angelica See of Nanyang Technological University finished first in 2:12:45, ahead of schoolmate Collette Seow (2:15.09) and Tan Xiao Wei of NUS (2:16.49).
