S'pore win clutch of silvers, bronzes on final day of SEA Youth Athletics C'ships

ILAGAN CITY (PHILIPPINES) - Singapore wrapped up its campaign at the 12th South-east Asian Youth Athletics Championships by winning another four silvers and four bronzes on the second and final day of the competition on Tuesday (March 28).

ILAGAN CITY (PHILIPPINES) - Singapore wrapped up its campaign at the 12th South-east Asian Youth Athletics Championships by winning another four silvers and four bronzes on the second and final day of the competition on Tuesday (March 28).

In a sign of growing depth in the Republic's future national squad, the medals came from a variety of track and field events. Singapore won silvers in two track and two field events. Its bronzes were from one track and three field events.

Syed Hussain Aljunied captured his second silver of the Championships when he added a second-placed finish in the Boys' 1,500m to Monday's runner-up spot in the 3,000m. He clocked 4min 11.73sec.

Singapore's three other silvers came from Sacin Esan Maran in the Boys pole vault (3.80m), Ting Jia Wang in the Boys' Javelin (700g) (53.79m) and Ernest Ong in the Boys' Triple Jump (13.76m).  

There were bronzes from Thiruben Thanrajan, who finished the Boys' 400m in 49.05sec, Shawn Jong in the Boys' 400m hurdles (55.31sec), Matthew Lee in the Boys' 5kg shot put (14.98m) and Arfan Azhar in the Boys' Triple Jump (13.70m).

The squad's final medal tally was two golds, seven silvers and five bronzes.
