SINGAPORE - Midway through her final freestyle routine at the 2016 Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) World Cup of Indoor Skydiving on Saturday in Warsaw, Poland, 14-year-old Kyra Poh suffered a hit on her side in the wind tunnel and lost her shoe.

But that did not stop the Singaporean from keeping her composure to complete her routine and clinch the world junior freestyle title.

Kyra, a student at the School of the Arts, registered a nine-round points-total of 63.3 points to win the gold medal ahead of Poles Andrzej Soltyk (61.2) and Aleksandra Soltyk (59.4).

“It was actually really difficult without the shoe because my routine had a move that required me to run on the net and it was really slippery and difficult for that last part. So I was really happy when I finished it,” the Singaporean teen said.

A member of Team Firefly Singapore that trains at the iFly Singapore in Sentosa - the only accessible vertical wind tunnel in the country - Kyra and her teammate Choo Yi Xuan also placed fourth in the Dynamic 2-way category on Saturday.

This is not the first time Kyra and Yi Xuan have tasted honours on an international stage.

In April, the pair were champions in the two-way artistic category at the 2016 Bodyflight World Challenge — the world’s largest indoor skydiving competition — in Bedfordshire, Uniked Kingdom.

Kyra was also this year’s Australian Championship Freestyle Open champion in August.

She hopes Singapore’s recent success in indoor skydiving will boost the sport’s popularity in Singapore.

“I hope it’ll be an Olympic sport one day,” said Kyra.
