SINGAPORE – A selfless act by four bowlers from the Singapore Sports Schools (SSP) has earned the quartet kudos from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Last Wednesday (April 19), James Lowe, Aidan Poh, Jarred Lim and Oh Han Qin were travelling in a bus bound for the Temasek Club where they were scheduled to compete in the National Schools Bowling Championships ‘A’ Division Boys Doubles.

However, the bus came to a halt 200m from the venue as a huge tree had fallen on the road, making it impassable to vehicles and pedestrians.

With only half an hour left to the start of the competition, the boys ALSO faced disqualification from their events.

Using the skills learnt from their time at the Outward Bound School (OBS), the bowlers twirled up the branches and created an opening before helping pedestrians to get through the debris.

PM Lee said in a Facebook post published on Tuesday (Apr 25): “The weather has been stormy lately, but a good deed always brightens the day! Last Wednesday, four bowlers from the Singapore Sports School were on the way to a competition when their bus met a fallen tree across Rifle Range Road, blocking the way for both people and vehicles.

“For the four teenagers the decision was easy – make a path for people to get through! Using their Outward Bound Singapore (OBS ) experience, they soon made an opening through the branches, enough for people to pass through. At the risk of being late for their competition, they stayed to help others through the path they’d created.”

After 20 minutes, the teenagers and their coach made it to the National Schools Championships, where Aidan and Jarred claimed the gold, while Han Qin and James finished in sixth spot.

Said PM Lee: “As icing on the cake, two of the student-athletes won the gold medal in the doubles’ competition. Well done, Aidan, Jarred, Han Qin, and James!”

PM Lee’s post has since garnered over 2,200 likes. There was also much praise for the Sports School students in the comments section.

Koh Meiling wrote: “Great initiative and good work! Thank you to the 4 bowlers from the Singapore Sports School! Congratulations to the 2 student-athletes for winning the Gold medal in the doubles’ competition!”

Added Ghani Mohamed Ali: “Good thought and very purposeful effort to ease the hardship that the commuters were facing!!! Kudos to the youngsters.”
